IVA Calculation Guide for Bolivian Businesses

Everything you need to know to calculate, declare, and file Bolivia's Value Added Tax correctly — and avoid costly penalties.

Bolivia's Impuesto al Valor Agregado (IVA) is one of the most important taxes your business will deal with. At a standard rate of 13%, it applies to almost every sale of goods and services in the country. Yet many small and mid-sized businesses still miscalculate it — overpaying, underpaying, or missing filing deadlines that trigger automatic fines from the SIN (Servicio de Impuestos Nacionales).

This guide walks you through exactly how IVA works in Bolivia, how to calculate it correctly, and how to stay compliant with the SFE (Sistema de Facturación Electrónica) — the digital invoicing system now required for most businesses.

What Is IVA in Bolivia?

IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado) is Bolivia's version of a value-added tax, similar to VAT in Europe. It's a consumption tax charged at each stage of the supply chain, but ultimately borne by the end consumer. Businesses act as collectors — they charge IVA to customers and remit the difference between IVA collected and IVA paid on their own purchases to the SIN.

The standard rate is 13%, and it applies to virtually all commercial transactions unless specifically exempted (certain agricultural goods, medical services, and educational services have exemptions).

How IVA Works: Debits and Credits

Understanding IVA requires grasping two key concepts:

IVA to Pay = IVA Débito Fiscal − IVA Crédito Fiscal

If your débito exceeds your crédito, you owe the difference to the SIN. If your crédito exceeds your débito, you accumulate a tax credit balance that carries forward to future periods.

Step-by-Step IVA Calculation

Step 1: Know Your Base Amount

IVA in Bolivia is already included in the stated price of goods and services — it's not added on top. This is a critical distinction. The price the customer pays already contains the 13% IVA.

Example: Extracting IVA from a sale price

You sell a product for Bs. 1,000 (IVA included).

IVA amount = Price × (13 / 113)
IVA amount = 1,000 × 0.11504... = Bs. 115.04
Net price (before IVA) = 1,000 − 115.04 = Bs. 884.96

Step 2: Calculate Your Monthly Débito Fiscal

At the end of each tax period (monthly), add up the IVA from all invoices you issued to customers. Your accounting software or SFE platform should generate this automatically.

Monthly sales summary

InvoiceTotal (Bs.)IVA (Bs.)
0011,000115.04
0022,500287.61
00380092.04
Total4,300494.69

Débito Fiscal = Bs. 494.69

Step 3: Calculate Your Monthly Crédito Fiscal

Collect all invoices (facturas) you received from suppliers for business purchases and expenses. Only invoices issued through the SFE system are valid for crédito fiscal — so always request official facturas from your vendors.

Important: Personal expenses, purchases without a valid factura, and invoices issued to a different NIT do not qualify as crédito fiscal. Keep your purchase invoices organized — the SIN can audit up to 5 years back.

Step 4: Compute the Net IVA Payable

Net IVA = Débito Fiscal − Crédito Fiscal

Example: Bs. 494.69 − Bs. 210.00 = Bs. 284.69 owed to SIN

Filing Deadlines

IVA is filed monthly using Form 200 (Formulario 200) through the SIN's online portal or via your SFE-integrated accounting platform. Deadlines vary by the last digit of your NIT:

Last digit of NITFiling deadline
013th of the following month
1–214th–15th
3–416th–17th
5–618th–19th
7–820th–21st
922nd

Missing your deadline results in automatic penalties — a flat fine plus interest accrued daily. Filing late is almost always more expensive than filing on time, even if you can't pay immediately.

IVA and the SFE System

Since 2022, Bolivia has been transitioning businesses to the Sistema de Facturación Electrónica (SFE). Under SFE, every invoice is transmitted electronically to the SIN in real time. This means the SIN can cross-check your IVA declarations against your actual invoices automatically.

Discrepancies between declared IVA and invoiced amounts are flagged immediately, triggering audits. This is why manual calculations in spreadsheets are increasingly risky — a single entry error can create a mismatch your business then has to explain to the SIN.

Contably tip: Contably is Bolivia's only native SFE platform. It calculates your IVA débito and crédito automatically from your invoices, generates Form 200 pre-filled, and alerts you before your filing deadline. No manual math required.
