Most pricing mistakes in Bolivian SMEs are not about being too cheap or too expensive. They are about forgetting what is inside the price: the 13% IVA that goes to the SIN, the 3% IT on your gross income, and whether you can recover the IVA you paid on your own purchases. Get those three wrong and a product that looks like a 40% margin earns far less.
1. Markup is not margin
Markup is the percentage you add on top of cost. Margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit. They sound alike and give different numbers.
If your plan says “I want a 40% margin” and you apply a 40% markup, you will earn about 29%. Decide which number you mean and use the matching formula: price = cost ÷ (1 − target margin).
2. IVA is already inside the invoice total
IVA is 13% of the invoice total, not 13% added on top of a net price. That means a net price of Bs 1,000 you want to keep produces an invoice total of 1,000 ÷ 0.87 = Bs 1,149.43, of which Bs 149.43 is IVA. Seen from the net price, that is an effective rate of about 14.94%, not 13%. Quoting “price + 13%” leaves you short. Our IVA calculation guide goes deeper.
3. Crédito fiscal changes your real cost
When you buy with a valid invoice, the IVA on it is crédito fiscal you can deduct from the IVA you owe on sales, so your real cost is the invoice amount minus 13%. When you buy without a valid invoice, that 13% is simply lost. The same sale can look very different:
With the invoice: crédito fiscal Bs 130, so net cost Bs 870. The sale carries Bs 195 of IVA, leaving Bs 65 to pay after the crédito. Net sales are Bs 1,305, and IT at 3% of Bs 1,500 is Bs 45. Profit before overhead is 1,305 − 870 − 45 = Bs 390. Without the invoice there is no crédito, so you pay the full Bs 195 and the cost is Bs 1,000: 1,305 − 1,000 − 45 = Bs 260. The missing invoice cost Bs 130 on one sale. See which expenses qualify. For simplicity this example applies IT to the invoice total; your accountant can confirm the exact base for your case.
4. A pricing routine that holds up
This article is general information for Bolivian businesses, not tax, legal or financial advice. The example is illustrative and simplified; the exact IT base, rates and eligibility depend on your regime and activity. Confirm how the rules apply to your business with your accountant or the SIN before acting.
